Limescale – or calcite, or calcium carbonate CaCO3 – is composed of calcium and magnesium, minerals that are essential for bones, muscles and nerve function, which help reduce cardiovascular risk (Institut supérieur de la santé) and reduce intestinal absorption of oxalates, one of the main causes of kidney stones.
The problem with limescale arises when it builds up in pipes (slowing down the flow of water) and in the heating elements of household appliances such as washing machines, boilers and irons, reducing their efficiency and increasing their energy consumption by up to 30% per year.
